It's great news for the future of healthcare that our partners, CareQuality and CommonWell, are collaborating with the goal of expanding health data exchange opportunities among healthcare providers across the country. They have committed themselves to advancing interoperability, which will ultimately result in improved patient care. "To achieve nationwide interoperability that truly improves patient care, two things are required: collaboration across the healthcare industry and the will to take real action," said Jitin Asnaani, executive director of CommonWell Health Alliance. A willingness to work together for the common goal of population health will be the driving force to making large scale improvements in the healthcare industry.

Chris Bradley, Mana Health's CEO and Co-Founder, was featured in Health Data Buzz, where he discussed the healthcare industry's efficiency problem and how Mana Health is poised to help fix it. Bradley examines why the value-based care model has been unsuccessful thus far, due in large part to a lack of integration technology that would allow health systems to share data seamlessly in order to improve patient care. “We want to crack the code of having a sustainable and scalable network,” Bradley says. One of the problems the industry has seen with the value-based care model is that without interoperability the problem will remain unsolved. He adds, "You cannot have value-based care without [interoperability].”

The 21st Century Cures Bill is a very exciting development for the advancement of interoperability. The first section of the bill, which covers "Transparent Reporting on Usability, Security and Functionality," outlines that a condition for health IT certification is health systems may not prohibit or restrict their interoperability with systems using different technology. This stipulation will effectively make EHR blocking a thing of the past, and brings the healthcare industry one step closer to full interoperability.

The election of Donald Trump brings a lot of uncertainty to the healthcare industry as a whole, as he has promised to repeal Obamacare (Affordable Care Act) within his first 100 days in office. Despite that, health IT still has a strong position within the industry and the government. The MACRA Final Rule and 21st Century Cures Bill both passed through Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support. On top of that 85% of hospitals have now adopted EHR technology. With the support of the government and healthcare industry, health IT is a safe bet to continue its growth.

In its annual report, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) praised the progress of EHR usage and HIE, however they say more progress is needed to make full interoperability happen. In order to increase interoperability ONC will focus on three priorities: 1- "The creation and promotion of common standards for seamless data exchange, especially through the use of open application programming interfaces." 2- "An overhaul of delivery systems to improve interoperability and the way CMS pays for care to reward quality." 3- "A culture change with regard to access to information, helping combat data blocking, educating individuals on their rights to access information and reminding providers they're legally allowed to exchange healthcare information when it comes to treatment."
